Lewis and Clark: Travels to the Source of the Missouri

First English Edition (1814)
with large folding map

"The most important of all overland narratives. . . . American explorers had for the first time spanned the continental United States and driven the first wedge in the settlement of our new far western frontier" (Grolier 100 American Books).

"I can see no material or probable obstruction to our progress, and entertain, therefore, the most sanguine hopes of complete success. As to myself, individually, I never enjoyed a more perfect state of good health than I have since we commenced our voyage. My inestimable friend and companion, captain Clarke, has also enjoyed good health generally. At this moment every individual of the party is in good health and excellent spirits, zealously attatched to the enterprise, and anxious to proceed; not a whisper of discontent or murmur is to be heard among them; but all in unison act with the most perfect harmony. With such men I have everything to hope, and but little to fear."

-Captain Meriwether Lewis to President Thomas Jefferson, April 17th, 1805

LEWIS, Meriwether, and William Clark. Travels to the Source of the Missouri River and across the American Continent to the Pacific Ocean. Performed by the Government of the United States, in the years 1804, 1805, and 1806. By Captains Lewis and Clarke. Published from the Official Report, and Illustrated by a Map of the Route, and other Maps. London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1814.  Superbly re-backed to style in modern 3/4 calf over contemporary marbled boards.  $35,000

First English edition of definitive account of the travels of Lewis and Clarke, the most important expedition in the history of the American continent. Although preceded by the Philadelphia printing of 1814 (published as History of the Expedition), this London edition of the same year was printed on larger, finer paper and in both typography and format is considered the superior edition. A FINE COPY: text very clean, map with slight offsetting but otherwise fine with no tears. Most rare in this condition.
