One of the most important
volumes in the Western World:
Extremely rare 1611 first
edition, first issue of the King James Bible,
the famous "He" Bible, one of approximately 50 known copies
|

|
Published in 1611 under the auspices
of King James I, the King James Bible, or Authorized Version, quickly
became the most popular and enduring of all Bible translations. It was a
monumental project: the combined effort of 54 scholars working for over
seven years with countless source texts. As well as holding a profound
religious importance-- it was the standard English Bible for over 300
years and is still the best-selling English version-- the King James
Bible exerted a marked influence on English style and the English
language.

| Of the approximately 200 extant copies of the
first edition, about 150 are what is generally considered the second issue: the
so-called "She" Bible with the corrected misprint in Ruth 3:15 ("he
went into the citie" corrected to "she") and the Old Testament
title page dated 1613. The "He" Bible, with both New and Old Testament
title pages dated 1611 and the "he" misprint is generally regarded as
the first issue and is considerably rarer with only an estimated 50 extant
copies. |
