“[Anne Frank] became the most memorable figure to
emerge from World War II--besides Hitler, of course, who also proclaimed
his life and his beliefs in a book. In a way, the Holocaust began with
one book and ended with another. Yet it was Anne's that finally
prevailed--a beneficent and complicated work outlasting a simple and
evil one.”
-Roger Rosenblatt.
FRANK, Anne. Het
Achterhuis [The Secret Annex; Diary of a Young Girl]. Amsterdam:
Contact, 1947. Octavo, original paper boards. $12,000.
Scarce first edition of one of the
central documents of the twentieth century. One of only 1500 copies
printed. Because of its fragile format and immediate popularity, very
few copies of the first edition have survived. There are no copies in
OCLC, and no copies at such major institutions as the rare book division
of the New York Public Library, the Yale library, the Morgan Library,
the Huntington Library, and the Simon Wiesenthal Center. The
only copy we were able to locate is in the Anne Frank House in
Amsterdam. Without the extremely scarce dust jacket (the copy in the
Anne Frank House has only a later edition dust jacket). Dampstaining to
spine extending into edges of boards, hinges tender. A rare first
edition of one of the world's most beloved and influential books. |
