Francis Barlow's magnificent 1687 edition of Aesop's Fables
with 30 superb full page engravings, plus 110 in-text engravings

 

[Aesop.]  Aesop's Fables with his Life: in English, French and Latin. Newly Translated. Illustrated with One hundred and twelve Sculptures. To this Edition are likewise added, Thirty one New Figures representing his Life. By Francis Barlow. [London]: Printed by H. Hills jun. for Francis Barlow.. 1687.  Folio, early full calf, elaborately gilt decorated spine.  Text in Latin, French and English.  

Second edition (first published in 1666; virtually all copies of the first edition were destroyed in the great fire of London of 1666).  Beautifully illustrated with engraved title, full-page frontispiece engraving of Aesop on the verso of "To the Reader" leaf, engraved plate of the coat of arms of the Earl of Devonshire, thirty (of thirty-one, without the suppressed plate, No. 17) engraved plates by Thomas Dudley after Francis Barlow illustrating the life of Aesop, and 110 engravings in the text.  Hinge repair to upper cover, reinforcement to gutter of first few leaves, interior exceptionally clean and bright.  A lovely copy of this superb edition of Aesop’s Fables.
