Octavo, original full brown morocco with elaborate floral art nouveau leather onlays and gilt designs on boards, spines, and doublures; original varnished watercolors depicting log cabins inset on front doublures of each volume, silk endpapers, top edges gilt. Twenty-four volumes. $40,000.

Extremely rare Log Cabin Edition, edited by Nicolay and Hay, number 4 of only 8 sets produced, extra-illustrated with a profusion of autograph material including a note in Lincoln’s hand. Superbly bound. 

This esteemed Nicolay and Hay collection of Lincoln’s complete works has been expanded to include countless engravings, photogravures, and original autograph material to form a unique set (one of eight issued of this edition, each with different autograph material). Volume 24 includes an autograph note in Lincoln’s hand: “Sec. Of War / Please see Mr. Edwards a moment. / A.L.” Also among the autograph material are several petitions addressed to President Lincoln, an ALS by William Seward, Lincoln’s Secretary of State, the signature of Rutherford B. Hayes, an ALS by former Treasury Secretary Thomas Corwin concerning President Johnson’s impeachment, an 1861 ANS by Horace Greeley from the Tribune, an ALS discussing the Campaign of Chancellorsville from General Williams to Henry Dawson; autograph material by General John Sanborn, Goerge Folsom (addressed to Lincoln), Durbin Ward, Major Generals Robert Milroy and Richard Johnson, and many more dignitaries and prominent men of Lincoln’s era. A remarkable set with extremely valuable autograph material, in extraordinary bindings with watercolors of log cabins in each volume. Fine condition. Most rare.
